CONTROL Resonant Combat Loop — Aberrant Aggression Explained

Jump: Switch Attack · Retaliation / Perfect Dodge

CONTROL Resonant Switch Attack

Answer: A Switch Attack replaces your primary combo finisher with your secondary Aberrant form. Land three primary attacks, then press secondary attack (not after finishing the normal fourth hit). The secondary form’s Switch Attack upgrade must be unlocked in its tree — a Switch talent on the primary tree is not enough.

  • Sequence: Primary → Primary → Primary → Secondary
  • Don’t charge the secondary input for Switch (tap).
  • If it “doesn’t work,” confirm the secondary form’s Switch skill, avoid accidental dodge-attacks, and don’t complete the normal finisher first.

Retaliation (Perfect Dodge)

Answer: Unlock Perfect Dodge in Talents (after The Gap opens). Dodge just before an attack lands to gain Retaliation: your next attack gets a large Damage + Falter boost (commonly +50%). Talent upgrades can add Falter (Retribution), Power refund (Sanctioned Retaliation), or Extended Retaliation (next two attacks within ~5 seconds).

Launch hotfix (Sep 24): Remedy reduced early-game enemy tankiness (health + Falter requirements) and raised Aberrant / Ability Strength ceilings after EA and critic notes. Use Assist Mode (Gameplay options) if you still want more or less challenge. Patch log: Updates.

After the loop clicks, lock a beginner loadout and practice on early World Feats before the first hard Resonant.

Searching for a CONTROL Resonant combat guide that is not a tier list? This page explains the CONTROL Resonant combat loop in plain language — how the Aberrant melee weapon, abilities, and finishers feed each other — using official PlayStation / Xbox deep dives and press hands-ons. No ranked forms. No “best Dylan build.”

CONTROL Resonant is melee-first, not a shooter

Unlike 2019’s Service Weapon fantasy, CONTROL Resonant combat centers on a shapeshifting Object of Power called the Aberrant. You stay in melee range, swap forms on demand, and layer paranatural abilities on top. Press comparisons often cite a fast Doom-like tempo, including glory-kill-style finishers called Falters.

The aggression loop (how power refills)

Official combat deep dives describe a closed loop:

  1. Hit with the Aberrant — melee pressure restores ability resources.
  2. Spend abilities — paranatural powers strip armor, control crowds, or open windows.
  3. Execute Falters — finishers punish vulnerable enemies and return momentum to melee.
  4. Repeat — aggression fuels power; standing off and poking breaks the rhythm.

That loop is the answer to “how does Aberrant combat work?” — stay aggressive, keep form swaps intentional, and treat abilities as amplifiers, not a separate gun game.

Aberrant forms (preview names, not ranks)

Hands-on and official previews name Primaries such as Flurry (fast dual blades / crit pressure), Slash (scythe-style group cuts), and Slice (heavier single-target axe). Secondaries reported in coverage include Crush, Drill, and Extend. Forms change how you approach a pack — they are tools, not a published meta ranking on this site.

The Gap — loadouts between fights

Progression previews highlight The Gap: Dylan’s mind-space for abilities, talent choices, and Aberrant upgrades after defeating powerful Resonants. Think loadout + talent board between set pieces, not a live loot treadmill. Full pillar list: Gameplay.

Traversal that feeds combat

Manhattan zones use gravity anomalies, inverted geometry, and grappling (Reach in press). Vertical space is part of the fight — reposition mid-loop instead of kiting like a cover shooter. Orientation checklist: before you play.

What this page will not do

No Aberrant tier list, no spoiler boss walkthroughs, and no “best build” claims before we can label first-hand launch play. After Sep 22 early access / Sep 24 digital launch, we may add short sourced notes — still dossier voice, still no wiki clone.
